The summer institute is a three-day program designed to inform and create awareness of library and information science among potential scholars. It is an excellent way to meet with mentors and explore opportunities in the field. A number of LIS topics will be covered ranging from preparation for graduate studies to librarianship career exploration. Activities such as field trips to academic and local libraries and other cultural centers may also be included. The summer institute held annually at a different host institution from the partner network.
The Michigan State University Libraries are hosting the 2010 LAMP Summer Institute from May 20th to the 23rd; scholars, speakers, and affiliates may apply here. Non-LAMP affiliates who want to attend may complete and print a separate form.
The third annual LAMP Summer Institute took place July 8 – 12, 2009. Last year’s event was hosted at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University, River Forest, IL. The institute offered two full days of workshops, sessions and a visit to DePaul University Library and focuses on academic librarianship and special libraries. During the two final days of the institute participants attended select ALA Conference events. The institute brings together scholars, professionals and faculty and builds on creating a strong network and an interrelated diverse LIS community.
Registration for next year will be posted soon online
The second LAMP Summer Institute was held June 1-4, 2008 at the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. All of the 2008 scholars and four of the 2007 scholars attended the event, along with several library and information science professionals from all over the midwest. Attendees toured the Raynor Memorial Libraries at Marquette University and attended discussions and sessions addressing a variety of aspects of academic librarianship and graduate school.
The first LAMP Summer Institute was held May 21-23, 2007 at the Friedrick Conference Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Eight of the nine selected LAMP Scholars attended the event. The institute offered workshops ranging from panel discussions to hands-on sessions. During the institute, scholars were teamed up with mentors and had the opportunity to engage in discussions with many professionals in the field who will provide them with ongoing support and feedback throughout their graduate career.
Many thanks to Prof. Louise Robbins, Kate Vo Thi-Beard, and all of the panelists, presenters, and participants who made this such a memorable event.
